A Tempe motorcycle police officer was hit by a cab driver early Sunday morning while on his bike near University Drive and Rural Road. The taxi hit the officer while the driver was making an illegal U-turn. The officer was knocked off his motorcycle into the street and suffered serious injuries. He was taken to the hospital but is expected to be ok. This accident is a shocking example of how motorcycles are often not seen by drivers of vehicles, even in this case, police bike that should be the most conspicuous. It also reminds us that even “professional” drivers such as taxi drivers make bad moves on the road and can easily cause an accident and injuries to any of us.
The taxi driver was clearly at fault: he was cited with two civil citations, which actually sounds lenient as the police officer is lucky to be alive. Accidents involving motorcyclists can be extremely dangerous and the rider can easily suffer from serious, possibly life threatening injuries.
